I found the most delightful little website today, Pumpkin Carving 101.
It appears to be written by a member of a family that simply enjoys pumpkins. They offer some fantastic tips on pumpkin carving, tools, stencils, patterns, and even some history on how pumpkins came to be carved into jack-o-lanterns.
Be sure to read about their tradition of burying their jack-o-lanterns in the backyard the day after Halloween.

As the leaves begin to change and the farm stands squeeze out their last bits of fresh produce and vegetables, there is one ritual I usually cannot wait for once October rolls around.
Large or small, round or oval — as long as it’s a bright orange, I’m happy.
As far back as I can remember, I took part in the Halloween ritual of pumpkin carving. Most were pretty simple — the triangle eyes, nose and smiling mouth (sometimes I got creative and made a few teeth). With other pumpkins, I attempted to tap into my creative side, creating a black cat (which wasn’t really black) and a ghost.
But times they are a’changing…..and folks today have created the most amazing pumpkin carving designs I’ve ever seen! From shallow cuts to barely let the light shine through on intricate designs, to entire sculptures using many pumpkins to create pumpkin people and pumpkin neighborhoods. You can go wherever your imagination takes you.
